„From the beginning of time, female sexuality has been frightening. Through morality and rationalization, we have sought to tame it, master it. Not just men, but women too have historically been frightened by the power of their own sensuality.
In our modern culture still, a man’s conquest is a woman’s sin. Here is a double-standard which seeks to be dispelled. The question is, how to destroy the double-standard without also destroying that which is magical about a woman – her inevitable ability to withhold.
She who is consumed by sin is a greater woman for denying it than she who sins openly. It appears not to be the act of sinning itself which is the sin for a woman, but rather the broadcasting of it. And for a man, the opposite – for a man is expected to broadcast his sins, or surely he is no man at all.
Although culturally we have come to a greater scientific understanding of female sexuality, and certainly a new openness to it, this seems to have served to further obfuscate rather than illuminate the concept. Now we have pornography to light the way, and women are more outspoken than ever on matters of sex. Still, for all our „enlightenment,” we are remarkably guilty of depraving female sexuality, rather than demystifying it.
Historically, the most accomplished women, and certainly the most historically interesting, have been those who wielded the power of their sexuality. During periods of ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian culture, prostitutes were temple-based, sanctified by the gods. In ancient Greek society, prostitutes and slaves mingled more freely among men, being present at their parties and business dealings than the common wife. In these and other ancient societies, concubines and prostitutes carefully studied the art of sex so as to better please the masters they served. In ancient times we had the Kama Sutra, Geisha, hetaira. Now we have porn stars and crack whores. We have never been more comfortable with female sexuality, nor more removed from it.”
